Duke Henry the Lion founded Landsberg in the 12th century as a toll station on the Lech. The town flourished in the Middle Ages thanks to the salt trade. In the 15th century the still-preserved town walls were built. Adolf Hitler wrote "Mein Kampf" here during his imprisonment in 1923/24.
